What is FedEx overnight shipping?

It's a fast next-day shipping service. Shipments are delivered the day after they're dropped off at a FedEx location or picked up from the customer.

Make sure you get your shipment to FedEx before the overnight cutoff time. Call your local store to confirm cutoff times and check the Last Days to Ship page to see which days the service is open and operating hours during different holidays.

Details on FedEx overnight shipping

  • Services days

These services deliver Monday–Friday. Saturday delivery is available in certain areas for an additional charge. FedEx Standard Overnight is only available for Saturday pickup, not Saturday delivery.

  • Weight limit and maximum package size

You can ship packages up to 150 lbs. each, up to 119" in length, 165" in length plus girth (L+2W+2H).

  • Delivery area

Delivery is available throughout the United States. Deliveries to and from select ZIP codes in Alaska and Hawaii may differ from delivery times in the contiguous U.S. Get additional details about Alaska and Hawaii.

  • Drop off deadlines

The latest you can drop off a package at a FedEx location for overnight shipping varies by location. Call to confirm cutoff times with the store.

  • You do not need an account.

No account registration is required; you only need to create a shipping label and select your overnight service option under Service type in the Package & Shipment Details section.

Three types of FedEx overnight shipping

Early morning delivery

FedEx First Overnight®: Delivery the next-business-day morning by 8 a.m., 8:30 a.m., 9 a.m. or 9:30 a.m. to most areas. Additional extended delivery locations are guaranteed up to 2 p.m.

Mid-morning delivery

FedEx Priority Overnight®: Delivery the next business day by 10:30 a.m. to most businesses in the contiguous U.S. and by noon to residences and 4:30 p.m. to some rural areas.

Afternoon delivery

FedEx Standard Overnight®: Next-business-day delivery by 4:30 p.m. to U.S. businesses and by 8 p.m. to residences.

How to calculate the costs?

Shipping costs depend on which type of service you choose, the distance to your delivery address, and the weight of your package.

Generally, the shorter the time, the farther the distance, and the heavier the package will lead to the more expensive shipping cost. For the specific calculation method, please check here

Packaging for overnight shipments

You can pick up free FedEx Express ® packaging at a FedEx store. They offer 12 white packaging options for overnight shipments, including envelopes, paks, tubes, and boxes in sizes small to extra-large. You also can ship with your package.

Need help packing? Head to a FedEx Office location, and our experts can pack your box for a fee.

If you’re shipping items that need to be delivered the next day and must stay cold overnight, use FedEx cold shipping boxes that maintain a constant 2–8°C (35.6–46.4°F) temperature.

They’re easy to use, and you can order them online. Or call their cold shipping hotline at 1.888.817.9993 (U.S. shipping) or 1.813.612.6010 (non-U.S. shipping) to learn more.

What to do if my package is over 150 lbs?

Use FedEx First Overnight® Freight for next-day delivery by 9 a.m. or 10:30 a.m. to most primary service area ZIP codes.

  • Delivery time

This service delivers Monday–Friday. Saturday pickup and delivery are available in certain areas for an additional charge.

  • Delivery area

Delivery is available throughout the United States. Hawaii service is to and from the island of Oahu only. Deliveries to and from select ZIP codes in Alaska and Hawaii may differ from delivery times in the contiguous U.S.

  • Packaging requirements

Individual pieces over 150 lbs. should be banned from the pallet with either metal strapping or unbreakable plastic straps applied around the box or skid freight on all sides.

Hardened containers (plywood, metal) that are not banded should have an exterior lock or clamp (glue, nails, and screws are not sufficient). An Extra Services Charge will be assessed if your shipment doesn’t meet these guidelines.

  • Special instructions

FedEx First Overnight Freight requires advance confirmation. Book space online with your FedEx account or by calling 1.800.332.0807.
